Collection of original drawings for the comic strip, Dondi, and correspondence. Original drawings (3,459 items): Sundays and dailies, 11/10/74-12/29/85, some with color guides -- Correspondence includes penciled note from Gus Edson which resulted in the Dondi collaboration with Hasen and letters in praise of Hasen's handling of the subject of child abuse in the strip in 1976.

Irwin Hanan Hasen was born July 8, 1918 in New York City. He studied art at the National Academy and the Art Students League. During the thirties he free-lanced in advertising and movie public relations and worked as a sports cartoonist. He went on to do art work for several comic books: The Green Hornet (1940), The Fox (1940-42), The Green Lantern (1941), The Flash (1943) and Citizen Smith, Son of the Unknown Soldier (1941). Gus Edson (1901-1966) was an American cartoonist and writer who created the comic strip Dondi . Edson was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on September 20, 1901 to Max and Emma Edson. At age 17, Edson joined the army and served in Australia in 1918. After briefly studying at the Pratt Institute and also at the Art Students League of New York, Edson embarked on a career with a string of newspapers in a variety of capacities.
